Terms of service
Last updated 11 October 2026. This is a draft for review by a Kenyan lawyer before launch.
These terms are an agreement between you and Fedhaly Ltd, which runs Uandishi. By creating an account or using Uandishi you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.
1. What Uandishi does
Uandishi marks children's handwritten English compositions and Kiswahili insha from photographs, against the Kenyan CBC rubric for the child's grade. It reads the handwriting, gives a level, points out mistakes with a correction and an explanation, and suggests next steps. It keeps each child's work as a Writing journey so families can see progress.
Uandishi's feedback is a learning aid. It is produced by AI and checked by a second, independent AI marking and by rules, and teachers can review it, but it can still be wrong. It is not an official assessment, a KNEC result or a school report.
2. Who can use it
- Parents and guardians create an account and add their children. Only a parent or legal guardian may add a child, and you confirm you are one when you do.
- Children in Grades 4 to 9 never sign in. A parent, guardian or teacher uses Uandishi for them.
- Students in Grades 10 to 12 may have their own account, only after a parent or guardian approves it.
- Teachers use Uandishi through their school, or as an independent teacher after we check who they are.
- Schools register with their KNEC school code and accept the standard school agreement, which applies to them in addition to these terms.
You must give accurate details and keep your sign-in secure. You're responsible for what happens in your account.
3. Your account
You sign in with Google or with a link we email you; there is no password. If someone else may have used your account, tell us at [email protected]. You can delete your account at any time in Settings.
4. Prices and payment
- A marked page costs KES 10 , whatever the grade or language. A two-page essay costs KES 20.
- You pay ahead by topping up a wallet with M-Pesa (to Fedhaly Ltd's paybill 4115491, with M-Pesa's usual charge paid by you) or a card (through Paystack). The smallest top-up is KES 10. The full prices are on the pricing page .
- The cost of an essay is held when marking starts and charged only when marking succeeds. A photo that can't be read, a page that isn't handwriting, or marking that fails is not charged.
- Teachers never pay. When a teacher uploads a class's essays, Uandishi pays for the marking, and a parent pays only if they choose to unlock the full results (KES 10 a page). A school or teacher may pay instead, so parents see the results already unlocked.
- Prices may change. A change never affects credit already in your wallet, and we'll show the new price before you send an essay.
5. Wallet credit
Wallet credit is a prepaid credit for Uandishi's marking, not money held for you. It can be used only on Uandishi, can't be transferred or exchanged for cash, and expires 12 months after your last top-up; we send a reminder by SMS 30 days before. Refunds are covered by our refund policy .
6. Fair use
Use Uandishi only for children's real handwritten work, and only for the children you're responsible for. Don't upload work that isn't handwriting, other people's children's work without permission, or anything unlawful or harmful. Don't try to break, overload, copy or resell the service.
Teachers' marking is free and has no page cap, but it is watched for fair use: a school whose use is far out of line is warned first and may then be limited to a weekly allowance, as the school agreement describes. Uandishi never cuts a school off without warning.
7. Children's work and your content
You keep the rights to what you and your children write and upload. You give Uandishi permission to store it and process it to provide the service: reading it, marking it, showing it to the family and, for school work, the school. We don't sell it, and we don't use children's essays to advertise. How we handle personal data is in our privacy notice .
8. Messages
We email you about your account and your children's work. A teacher may send you SMS about your child's school work, such as a link to their results. Reply STOP to any message, or change it in Settings, and they stop.
9. Wellbeing
If a child's essay suggests they may be at risk of harm, our staff may look at it and follow our safeguarding procedure. In an emergency, call Childline Kenya on 116.
10. Availability and changes
We work to keep Uandishi running, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance. We may change, add or remove features. If we stop the service, we'll tell you in advance and let you download your family's data.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using Uandishi and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, after warning you where we reasonably can.
12. Our responsibility
We provide Uandishi with reasonable care and skill. As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for decisions made only on the basis of Uandishi's feedback, or for losses we couldn't reasonably have foreseen. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under Kenyan consumer protection law that can't be limited.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change matters to you, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Using Uandishi after that means you accept the new terms.
14. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya. If you have a complaint, write to us first at [email protected] and we'll try to resolve it. Otherwise the courts of Kenya decide.
